A UC Davis fundraising drive is underway to support the Bohart Museum of Entomology in memory of noted entomologist W. Harry Lange Jr. (1912-2004).

When the UC Davis School of Medicine (SOM) hosts its 2025 Convergence Research Celebration on Tuesday, April 8, the TEDx talk speakers will include two researchers from the Department of Entomology and Nematology (ENT): UC Davis distinguished professor Bruce Hammock and research scientist Christophe Morisseau of the Hammock lab.

UC Davis doctoral alumnus Douglas Walsh, a professor and Cooperative Extension specialist in the Department of Entomology, Washington State University for nearly three decades,  will receive the C. W. Woodworth Award, the highest honor from the Pacific Branch, Entomological Society of America (PBESA), at its March 30-April 2 meeting in Phoenix.

Humans use the chemical compound, hydrogen peroxide, as a disinfectant, bleach, and antiseptic, but a newly published UC Davis study indicates that “diverse plant species, not just tobacco, protect their nectar from bacteria and fungi by producing varying levels of hydrogen peroxide.”

Carla-Cristina “CC” Edwards, a second-year doctoral student in the lab of UC Davis medical entomologist-geneticist Geoffrey Attardo, is the newly elected chair of the Young Professionals (YPs) of the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA). 

UC Davis doctoral candidate Mia Kanako Lippey, described as a "leader extraordinaire and an awe-inspiring entomologist who not only excels in leadership, but in research, academics, public service, science communication, computer programming, and scientific illustrations," is the recipient of the 2025 Student Leadership Award from the Pacific Branch, Entomological Society of America (PBESA).

What do we know about the impacts of pesticides on pollinators? What steps do regulatory agencies like the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) take to safeguard our pollinators?  Are protections from the EPA adequate or inadequate? 

UC Davis professor emeritus Bruce Eldridge (1933-2025), an internationally recognized medical entomologist whose military,  academic and administrative career spanned more than six decades, enjoyed many outside interests. Among them: he played his banjo in bluegrass bands and he loved trains.  Eldridge was a dedicated rail enthusiast who took many trips with his friend, Ken Lorenzen.

Felicity Muth, assistant professor, Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, UC Davis College of Biological Sciences, will give a special presentation via Zoom on “How Do Animals Think? Some Insights from Bumble Bees” from 3:10 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20.

UC Davis distinguished professor Walter Soares Leal soared from a self-described “rough childhood” in his native Brazil to become an internationally recognized scientist celebrated for his research on chemical communication and olfaction in insects.

But in his early childhood, he disliked insects, especially the cockroaches that crawled into his mouth while he was sleeping, and mosquitoes that bit him when he was and wasn’t.

The Pacific Branch, Entomological Society of America (PBESA), singled out three members of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology, and a UC Davis doctoral alumnus for special awards. The complete list was announced today (Feb. 5).

Professor Jason Bond of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology, described as “a powerhouse in the world of systematics and arachnology,” is the newly selected recipient of the 2025 Systematics, Evolution, and Biodiversity Award from the Pacific Branch, Entomological Society of America (PBESA).

What's on tap for the 14th annual UC Davis Biodiversity Museum Day on Saturday, Feb. 8?

It's a Super Science Day and an opportunity to explore, discover and connect, says chair Tabatha Yang, education and outreach coordinator for the Bohart Museum of Entomology and a co-founder of Biodiversity Museum Day. It's an opportunity to chat with the scientists. The event is free and family friendly.
